The only place in Argentina where you can see the red-and-green macaw in the wild
To the north of the Esteros del Iberá, just 30 km from the town of Ituzaingó along a gravel road.
The portal has a camping area, shelters with fire pits and bathrooms with showers. There is no shop, so bring your own supplies and essentials.

The portal in photos
Portal Cambyretá and the return of the red-and-green macaw
The red-and-green macaw was extinct in Argentina for decades. Today, at Portal Cambyretá, it can be seen flying in flocks through the Paranaense forest. It is the only place in the country where that happens. The reintroduction programme of the Fundación Cambyretá, at the Don Luis reserve, has taken years of sustained work, and the results are visible to anyone who visits the portal at dawn or dusk, when the macaws come back to roost in the trees.
Cambyretá is the northernmost portal of the Great Iberá Park, and its landscape differs from the rest of the system: instead of the open marsh of Carlos Pellegrini or Galarza, here gallery Paranaense forest dominates, with palms, bamboo and dense woodland. That also changes the wildlife you see: more canopy birds, more forest species, more mammals tied to the woods. The dorado and the surubí appear in the channels of the Paraná river, reachable from Ituzaingó.

The portal is 29 km of gravel from Villa Olivari, which sits 8 km off RN 12, and that makes it a natural stop for anyone travelling the Litoral corridor. From Ituzaingó the access is along RN 12 and it is only 15 km. The portal's camping area is free, with covered BBQ areas and a grill, but there is no general store: it is best to stock up on water and food in Ituzaingó or Villa Olivari before going in.
What to bring to Portal Cambyretá
Enough drinking water for the whole stay (the only water available is from the river), food to cook in the covered BBQ areas, high-strength insect repellent (the Paranaense forest has more mosquitoes than the open marsh), and binoculars if wildlife watching is the focus of the trip. The portal's trails are fine for trainers, no mountain gear needed. To see the macaw in the best conditions, the recommended outing is at dawn with one of the authorised local guides.
