Chanchita

Cichlasoma dimerus

The fish that raises its young as a couple. Mum and dad escort the cloud of fry through calm waters, and woe to anyone who comes close.

It forms stable pairs that prepare the nest together, clean a stone or submerged leaf, and defend their young with an aggression admirable for their size. The cloud of fry moves with its parents like a presidential escort in reverse.

Behaviour

Territorial in the breeding season. It lives in calm, vegetated water near the banks, feeding on invertebrates and plant matter.

How and when to see it

Spring and summer from piers and walkways: look for the cloud of tiny dots with two medium fish around it.
