Its Spanish name madrecita, little mother, is not a nickname but biology: females keep the eggs inside and give birth to fully formed young. In the shallow water along the banks it forms schools that dimple the surface, eating mosquito larvae.
Behaviour
A surface fish of calm water. It lives in schools near vegetation, where the young find instant shelter.
How and when to see it
All year round. Watch the shallow water from any pier or walkway: the little moving dots at the surface are usually this fish.
