The circuit of environmental recovery and birds. Three portals that hold the story of the return of extinct wildlife, wide grasslands and local nature guides.
Cambyretá, near Ituzaingó, is the portal of endless grasslands. Vast stretches of tall grass and native forest, with long trails and no mass tourism. It is the portal where the red-and-green macaw flew free again in 2015, a keystone species that returned to the ecosystem thanks to conservation projects.
San Nicolás is an essential conservation hub within Iberá: it hosts one of the Gran Parque's reintroduced populations of giant anteaters, born of the same rewilding project that brought the collared peccary and the pampas deer back to these wetlands. If an anteater shows up crossing the grassland at sunset with its cub on its back, it is a scene that is hard to forget.
Portal San Antonio, near Loreto, completes the circuit with a unique cultural dimension: highly specialized nature guides, astro-tourism under clean skies, local craftswomen and family-run eateries serving authentic Corrientes cooking. Loreto offers a rustic experience, and that is exactly its greatest value.
This circuit is for travelers who prefer depth over comfort: fewer mass services, more untouched nature and a direct connection with the conservation story that brought extinct species back to the Iberá.

Practical tips
- Hire specialized wildlife guides: the difference when it comes to finding cryptic fauna or reading tracks is enormous.
- San Nicolás and Loreto have limited lodging infrastructure. Book well in advance.
- The giant anteater is active by day and by night; in daytime it is seen more when it is cool, in open grassland areas.
- Road logistics: Cambyretá and San Antonio are reached on gravel roads, and San Nicolás via 27 km of sand and dirt, restricted to 4x4 vehicles according to the National Parks service. If it has rained, check road conditions.
