It spends most of its time in or beside the water, hunting frogs and small fish along vegetated edges. It is completely harmless and one of the most common snakes in the wetland, though its aquatic life means it is seen far less than it abounds.
Behaviour
Semi-aquatic. It swims easily among water hyacinths and rushes, and basks on floating vegetation.
How and when to see it
October to April. Watch the calm water near the banks from walkways and piers: that little head moving forward is her.
