Yellow Anaconda

The queen of the wetland among the reptiles. A semi-aquatic constrictor boa of diurnal and crepuscular habits, famous for its beautiful pattern of black and ochre-yellowish blotches that give it perfect camouflage among the floating water hyacinths and the water. Non-venomous: it kills its prey by constriction. Females are notably larger and bulkier than males. An ovoviviparous species: it gives birth to fully formed young, it does not lay eggs. Vulnerable at the national level in Argentina. Length: 2.5 to 4 m (exceptionally more than 4.5 m). Weight: 15 to 30 kg.

Behaviour

An ambush hunter. It captures its prey by surprise in the water or at the shores. An opportunistic carnivorous diet: waterbirds such as grebes and herons, coypus, small caimans and large fish. In winter it enters torpor, sheltering in deep burrows or beneath the floating peat mats.

How and when to see it

Spring to early autumn (October to April). The sunny days of spring are ideal: they come out to bask on the floating peat mats or on the low branches of shrubs overhanging the water.
