Caiman

Caiman latirostris / C. yacare

Two species in Iberá: the broad-snouted caiman (overo) and the yacare caiman (negro). Top predators of the aquatic ecosystem.

Their nests of decaying vegetation generate heat to incubate the eggs, and the incubation temperature determines the sex of the young. Despite their appearance, they rarely attack humans who keep their distance.

Behaviour

Ectothermic. Spends hours basking on banks and floating vegetation mats. Hunts mainly at night, ambushing fish, capybaras and waterbirds.

How and when to see it

Year round at any portal. The sunny edges of the floating vegetation mats hold dozens of individuals visible from the boat.
