You can tell it from the broad-snouted caiman by its narrower snout and the dark blotches along the jaw. Its nests of decaying vegetation generate heat to incubate the eggs, and the incubation temperature determines the sex of the young. Despite its reputation, it rarely bothers anyone who keeps their distance.
Behaviour
Ectothermic. It spends hours basking on banks and floating islands. It hunts mostly at night: fish, snails and whatever the water brings close.
How and when to see it
All year round at any gateway. Sunny banks concentrate dozens of individuals, easy to watch from the boat.
