Parrot Snake

Leptophis ahaetulla

Green with a golden sheen, a black mask and huge eyes. It lives in the trees and almost never comes down.

Its keeled scales give it a rough touch and a metallic shine in the sun. When cornered it opens its mouth wide in a theatrical threat display, but it is harmless to people.

Behaviour

Arboreal and diurnal. It glides along branches and vines with remarkable agility, hunting tree frogs and bird eggs.

How and when to see it

October to April in the forest patches. Watch the branches at eye level on wooded trails, especially near water.
