Pacú

Piaractus mesopotamicus

The "vegetarian" of the river. Its flat teeth crush seeds and fruits that fall into the water from the trees.

A relative of the piranha, its teeth are flat for crushing hard seeds (not carnivorous). Anglers seek it with fruit or dough baits. It can exceed 15 kg. Its meat is highly prized.

Behaviour

Omnivore, with a preference for fruit and seeds. Active at the surface during the fruiting of the pindó palm and the ceibo.

How and when to see it

November to March, when the riverside trees fruit. Portal Río Corriente and Canal de Goya.
