It is the base of the food chain: it feeds surubí catfish, golden dorados, herons, kingfishers and neotropical otters. Its massive upstream migration in autumn is one of the least known natural spectacles of Argentina.
Behaviour
A detritivore. It filters the muddy bottom with its downward-oriented mouth, releasing nutrients trapped in the sediment.

Year-round. The mass migrations of sábalo occur in autumn. Visible from any walkway or boat.
