The groove that names it in Spanish (canaleta) runs along the shell from front to back. The neck, folded sideways like its lagoon cousin, is covered in small soft spines. It lives in shallow, heavily vegetated marshes, hunting invertebrates and amphibians.
Behaviour
Aquatic and discreet: it spends its life among the vegetation of shallow water and rarely exposes itself on open logs.

Spring and summer, in shallow marshes. Seeing one is a small prize: log it if it shows up basking on the bank.
