Wildlife of Portal Carambola

Present year round at all 10 portals of the park. Sightings practically guaranteed from boats, kayaks and boardwalks. At Portal Laguna Iberá they swim by the dozen around the pier. Also very frequent at Carambola (calm streams), San Nicolás (boarding coves) and Galarza.

Dawn and dusk in grasslands and at woodland edges. Portals Carambola, Mburucuyá and San Antonio.

Mornings and afternoons at the edges of the woodland. Portals San Nicolás and Carambola.

Year round. Extremely common and tame in the public-use areas of Portal Laguna Iberá. Also frequent prowling the camping areas of Portal Carambola. Heard before it is seen.

Year round. Sightings are fleeting and concentrate at dusk or on night vehicle safaris, when its eyes shine at the level of the shoreline or the tracks. Portal Carambola and Portal Laguna Iberá (along the piers and boardwalks) have the most frequent records.

Ripe fruit from December to March. The penetrating citrus smell is detected from meters away even without seeing the tree, being an unmistakable olfactory marker of the Iberá gallery forest in summer. Very frequent on the trails of Portal Laguna Iberá and Portal Carambola.

Visible year-round, with its peaks of maximum expansion during the summer months (November to March). The shaded channels of Portal San Antonio, the calm waters of Portal Carambola and the sheltered bays of the Laguna Iberá often appear completely carpeted by these emerald mats.

Dawn and dusk in densely vegetated channels. Requires slow, silent navigation. Portals Laguna Iberá, Galarza and Carambola are the best sites.
