Devotion to Our Lady of Itatí was born from Franciscan missions of the late 16th century; the town was founded in 1615 by Fray Luis de Bolaños. The current basilica, inaugurated in 1950, stands imposing over the Paraná River with a dome approximately 83 meters high, one of the tallest in South America.
Every 16 July, thousands of pilgrims arrive on foot, horseback and in carts to celebrate the coronation of the Virgin (1900). Devotion to Our Lady of Itatí draws more than two million people per year, from Corrientes, the Littoral, Paraguay and Brazil.
