Antonio Mamerto Gil Núñez, known as Gauchito Gil, was a gaucho from the Mercedes area of Corrientes. According to legend, he died on January 8, 1878, about 8 km from the town, and from then on his devotion only grew, becoming a popular phenomenon throughout Argentina.
The sanctuary stands in this place, surrounded by chapels and offerings. Each January 8, thousands of pilgrims arrive with red candles to give thanks for favors and make promises. It is an almost mandatory stop for those entering Iberá via the Mercedes route.
