Mercedes was founded in 1832 by order of governor Pedro Ferré, on lands donated next to Paiubre creek. It took its name from the Virgin of Mercedes, its patroness, when its church was blessed in 1835.
Today it is the main gateway to Laguna Iberá Portal. It is worth exploring its historic downtown with the church of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, its old mansions, and the tranquil life of a Corrientes town before heading into the wetlands.
