The jaguar had been extinct in Corrientes since the mid-20th century due to hunting and habitat loss. Thanks to reintroduction efforts led by Rewilding Argentina, together with the provincial and national governments, the most imposing feline in the Americas returned to the Esteros: today there are around 50 specimens in the region.
The project also returned to Iberá species such as the giant anteater, pampas deer, and red-and-green macaw. In May 2026, two tourists filmed the jaguar Ombú on the shores of Laguna Iberá, live proof that the ecosystem is being restored.
