San Miguel, like Loreto, maintained the Jesuit-Guaraní tradition after the expulsion of the Jesuits. Reinstalled in the early 19th century, its inhabitants built a chapel dedicated to San Miguel Arcángel in the missionary style, with its cemetery beside it.
The town remembers Fray Francisco Regis Ortiz, 'Pai Pajarito', a former San Martín grenadier and later priest of these towns. San Miguel is the entrance gate to Portal San Nicolás.
