The city of Corrientes was founded on April 3, 1588 by the adelantado Juan Torres de Vera y Aragón. According to tradition, the founders planted a cross of urunday, a hard wood from the Litoral region, which the indigenous peoples tried to burn during an attack without succeeding: the flames did not consume the wood. That Holy Cross of Miracles, 3.75 meters tall, is the original cross from 1588 and is venerated today in the main altarpiece of its sanctuary.
The temple, the Santísima Cruz de los Milagros Church, stands in the Corrientes capital facing Plaza La Cruz, on Belgrano street. The complex is protected as a National Historic Site by Decree 112.765 of 1942. Every May 3, Feast of the Cross, the city celebrates its festival, a devotion dating back to 1806.
