Culebra verde

Philodryas aestiva

Grass green from head to tail, slender and fast. Invisible in the vegetation until it moves.

Its colour is its life: the uniform green hides it from birds of prey and makes it nearly impossible to spot among grasses and shrubs. It ambushes frogs, insects and lizards, trusting that nobody notices it.

Behaviour

Diurnal. It moves through low vegetation and bushes near the water, climbing into branches to bask.

How and when to see it

In the heat, October to April. Watch the bushes along trails and boardwalks: if something green moves, that is her.
