A small parrot of 26 to 28 cm with predominantly green plumage. The head is olive green with a reddish-brown forehead. The breast has a very fine, characteristic green-and-chestnut scaling. The belly and the underside of the tail are reddish chestnut (wine brown), the most distinctive trait of the species. The tail is green above (the subspecies of northeastern Argentina lacks the reddish tail tips). The cheeks are bluish green. The bill is horn-coloured. It lives in gallery forest and woodland with medium and large trees, where it nests in hollows.
Behaviour
Quieter and more discreet than the other parrots of the Iberá. It flies in groups of 2 to 10 individuals at medium and low height through the canopy. It feeds on small fruit, seeds, flowers and tender shoots. It nests in tree hollows. It frequents the forest interior more than the edges.
How and when to see it
Year round in well-preserved gallery forest. Easiest to see at dawn when they move about actively in search of food.
