Its Guaraní name means "swollen neck": the red pouch at its base inflates during courtship. It builds enormous nests that it reuses year after year, which can weigh more than 100 kg.
Behaviour
Monogamous for life. Fishes by walking slowly through shallow water. Soars in rising circles on thermal currents.
How and when to see it
Year round in flight over the marshes. Best sightings in the dry season when fish become concentrated.
