Despite its bulk it can fly very high on thermals. It has bony spurs on its wings that it uses to defend itself. Its call at dawn is one of the most iconic sounds of the marshes.
Behaviour
In pairs or small groups. Territorial. Builds a floating nest among the aquatic vegetation of the wetland.

Year round at the edges of lagoons and wetlands. Heard before it is seen. Easy to spot from the boat.
