The world's domestic guinea pigs descend from cavies like this one. In the Iberá it lives in colonies that maintain a network of clipped runways through the grass, their roofed highways. It feeds half the food chain, from fox to Geoffroy's cat, and compensates with tireless breeding.
Behaviour
Active at dawn and dusk. It leaves the runways to graze tender grass and bolts back at the slightest sound.
How and when to see it
Dawn and dusk along trail edges with short grass. Stand still near a runway and wait for one to peek out.
