A small deer, extremely slender and fast, adapted to open, dry grasslands. Adult males shed their three-pointed antlers at the end of summer and possess a strong characteristic musky odor (similar to garlic) that they secrete from a gland on the hind legs to mark territory. Endangered at the national level. Declared a Provincial Natural Monument. Height at the withers: 65 to 70 cm. Weight: 30 to 40 kg.
Behaviour
It lives in pairs or small groups of 3 to 6 individuals. Diurnal and extremely tame in the protected areas. An exclusive herbivore: tender grasses, legumes and shrub shoots in savanna and open dry fields. If startled, it breaks into a bounding run, raising its tail (white underneath) as an alarm signal.
How and when to see it
Year-round, with peaks of activity in the mornings and at dusk. They are very curious but flee in bounds if startled.
