Its Spanish name overo means dappled, for the olive, blotched tones of its body. The broad snout is a tool: it crushes large snails, one of its favourite foods. It prefers shallow, heavily vegetated water, where it moves among the water hyacinths showing little more than its eyes.
Behaviour
More discreet than the yacare caiman: it tends to stay still among floating plants. It nests on mounds of vegetation that the female guards.

All year round. Look for it in narrow channels and small lagoons thick with water hyacinth, where the broad snout gives it away.
