Its deep, sputtering call, just like an engine that will not start, gave it its Spanish name; the other name, painted climbing frog, comes from the red spots it hides on flanks and thighs and only shows when it jumps. It is Endangered, and Corrientes holds part of its last populations.
Behaviour
It lives in marshes and flooded tall grass. The male calls while floating in the vegetation, inflating two vocal sacs on the sides of its head.
How and when to see it
A jewel with very few records: the real chance is hearing it, that distant engine starting up on mild nights after rain.
