It almost never touches solid ground: it is born, sings, hunts and dies on the floating vegetation of the marsh. The eyes high on its head let it watch the surface while its body stays underwater, the same strategy the caiman uses, in miniature.
Behaviour
Active day and night on water hyacinths and water lettuce, hunting tiny insects. In danger, it dives.
How and when to see it
All year round on boat rides: look closely at the water hyacinth mats. In spring and summer its daytime choruses join in.
