Its name is its song: a deep tuc-tuc that echoes from the tunnels, marking territory without coming to the surface. It is endemic to Corrientes: it lives nowhere else on Earth. Its sand mounds give away the colonies in the sandy soils of the northeastern Iberá.
Behaviour
Subterranean and solitary: each individual keeps its own tunnel system. It pops out just long enough to clip grass and dive back down.
How and when to see it
You can hear it all year while walking sandy ridges. Seeing one takes luck: stay still near a mound of fresh earth.
