Large-billed Tern

Phaetusa simplex

The freshwater tern with an oversized yellow bill, huge as a banana. It plunge-dives from the air.

Nobody forgets their first one: an elegant grey-and-white tern with a massive yellow bill that seems borrowed from another bird. It patrols the lagoons at mid-height and when it spots a fish it drops in a plunge dive, with a splash that carries.

Behaviour

It flies alone or in small groups over open water. It rests on sandbars, logs and pier posts.

How and when to see it

All year round on the big lagoons. Boat rides on Laguna Ibera almost always include one fishing.
