The most common snipe of the marshes of Iberá. The cryptic plumage combines brown, cream, black and ochre tones with longitudinal stripes that camouflage it perfectly in the marshes. The bill is long and straight, about 6.5 to 8 cm. The body measures 27 to 30 cm. The eyes are set far back on the head, allowing nearly 360° vision.
Behaviour
Completely cryptic while on the ground; it trusts its camouflage until the intruder is within meters. Then it bursts into a short, zigzag flight with an explosive "choc" call that startles anyone. It feeds at night: it inserts its flexible bill up to the tip into the soft mud in search of earthworms, larvae and aquatic insects detected by touch.
How and when to see it
Year round in wetlands with muddy ground. Usually detected when accidentally flushed while walking along the edges of the wetland.
