The largest of the Iberá "crakes", measuring 21 to 24 cm. The plumage has an olive-brown back with black markings, a pale grey throat, grey neck and breast, and flanks with black and white bars. The eyes are red. The bill is yellowish-green. It inhabits cattail reedbeds, reedbeds and wet grasslands with water.
Behaviour
It walks cautiously among the emergent vegetation looking for insects, seeds and small invertebrates. Its call is a series of short, high notes given at dawn and dusk. Despite being the largest of the crakes, it is just as hard to observe directly.
