It lives at grass level, running between tussocks like a mouse, but to sing it climbs a post and repeats a short, high, slightly sad phrase for hours. The yellow brow, barely a brushstroke before the eye, is the key to not confusing it with the rufous-collared sparrow.
Behaviour
Terrestrial and discreet outside the singing season. It eats seeds and insects in the short grass.
How and when to see it
Spring and summer, when it sings in the open. The rest of the year it is a ghost of the grassland.
