The male does not sing to impress: he flies. In spring he rises fifteen or twenty metres in a fluttering display flight, crest raised and chest puffed, sings suspended in mid-air and dives back down. The female, grey with a pinkish belly, picks the best dancer.
Behaviour
It hunts insects in short flights from visible perches: fences, dead branches, canes. It always returns to the same spot.
How and when to see it
Spring and summer, when it arrives to breed. A red dot on a fence against the light: there is nothing else like it.
