Its tail looks broken and is actually its tool: the pointed, worn feathers serve as a brace for climbing vertical grass stems. It lives only in wet tall grasslands, a habitat vanishing across the continent but preserved at giant scale in the Ibera.
Behaviour
It climbs the grass tussocks and crosses between them in short, low flights, tail trailing.
How and when to see it
All year round in flooded tall grass. In spring it sings from the tops of the stems and shows itself better.
