A medium-sized ibis with reddish-chestnut plumage on the head, neck and body, with the wings and back black with metallic purplish and greenish sheen very striking in direct light. In the non-breeding season the plumage is duller. The long, curved bill is dark. It measures 48 to 58 cm. It superficially resembles the Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) but with white borders around the face in breeding adults.
Behaviour
It forages in groups, often mixed with bare-faced ibises, in wetlands, flooded watercourses and lagoon edges. It uses its bill to probe the mud for aquatic invertebrates, larvae, snails and crabs. It nests in dense colonies in marsh vegetation.
How and when to see it
Year round, with greater presence in spring and summer when the wetlands are active. Portals Laguna Iberá and Galarza are the best sites.
