A small tyrant flycatcher of 10 to 11 cm with an olive-brown back and a yellow belly. The crown has a black crest streaked with yellow that it can raise when excited. The wings have yellowish edges. The bill is short. It inhabits the rush beds, cattail beds and wet tussock grasslands of the Iberá, especially the wet edges with rushes and low vegetation. It is one of the smallest tyrant flycatchers of the Iberá and inhabits exclusively the wet grasslands and reedbeds.
Behaviour
Very active. It climbs to the tip of the rushes to sing, showing its raised black crest streaked with yellow. The song is a "do-ra-di-to" or a series of repeated high-pitched notes. It moves among the rushes searching for aquatic insects. It builds a spherical nest of fibers in the reedbed.
How and when to see it
Year-round. It is easily heard in the reedbeds. The best way to see it is to watch the tips of the rushes at dawn when the males are singing actively.
