One of the most striking rails of the Iberá for its highly contrasting plumage. The black upperparts, with abundant round white spots densely distributed across the back, wings and flanks, give it an unmistakable "piebald" or "painted" appearance. The breast and neck are blackish and the belly has white barring. The bill is greenish yellow with a red spot at the base. The legs are reddish. It measures 24 to 28 cm.
Behaviour
Similar in habit to the painted-billed rail: it lives within the dense reed and rush beds where it looks for insects, earthworms, small frogs and seeds. Very shy and hard to observe directly. Its call is a dry, repeated "rap" heard across the wetlands.
How and when to see it
Dawn, with slow, silent navigation along narrow channels lined with reeds. It can be looked for at Portal Capivari and in the interior of the Carambola marshes.
