It is the most patient of the Ibera herons: it can stay crouched on a log for whole minutes, neck tucked in, until a fish comes within reach. Elsewhere in the world it has been seen using bait, dropping insects on the water to draw fish in.
Behaviour
Solitary and territorial. It ambushes from shaded, vegetated banks and crosses the water in short, low flights.
How and when to see it
All year round. Check the fallen logs and shaded banks on boat rides, there is always one on duty.
