The yellow feet are not a whim: they are a fishing tool, shuffled along the bottom to flush fish and invertebrates it snaps up instantly. In breeding season it wears fine plumes on nape and chest, the same feathers that nearly drove it extinct when hats demanded them.
Behaviour
Active and restless: it walks, runs and stirs the shallows, unlike the large herons that wait motionless.
