Geoffroy's Cat

A robust, muscular silhouette very similar to a large domestic cat. Its typical coat is grayish or yellowish, densely covered with small circular black spots. In Iberá melanism is documented by camera traps, although seeing a jet-black individual is exceptional: in those animals the spots are only visible under direct sunlight. An exceptional climber that uses the tree canopies both to rest and to stalk its prey. Total length: 70 to 100 cm. Weight: 3 to 6 kg.

Behaviour

Markedly nocturnal and crepuscular. It spends the daylight hours hidden in the branches of native trees or among dense thickets. A strict carnivore and opportunistic hunter: small rodents, birds, frogs and large insects. Solitary, it marks out its territory with urine markings and latrines at the base of the trees.

How and when to see it

Year-round. The best opportunities occur during the night vehicle safaris or when walking the woodland trails in the late afternoon, when it begins to grow active.
