A medium-sized vulture very similar to the Turkey Vulture but with more uniform black plumage and a bald head in yellow-orange and red tones. It is distinguished from the Turkey Vulture in flight by its grayer secondaries and the color pattern on its head. It measures 53 to 66 cm, slightly smaller than its relative. A wetland specialist: it is the most frequent vulture soaring over the marshes, swamps and wetlands of the park's interior.
Behaviour
Like the turkey vulture, it locates carrion by smell. It prefers to fly very low over the wetlands and reed beds, tracking dead animals in the dense vegetation where other vultures cannot spot them visually.
How and when to see it
Year round over the open wetlands. It is often seen flying very low over the water hyacinth beds and reed beds at dawn.
