Absolute and elegant sexual dimorphism: the male is entirely jet-black with a head and neck of bright pure white, unmistakable at any distance. The female has gray and brownish-olive tones on the back with a whitish breast. Slender silhouette, short tail and electric movements. Total length: 12 to 13 cm.
Behaviour
A specialized insectivore with aquatic habits. It spends the day perched on low twigs, rushes or directly on the floating water hyacinths and water lettuce. From there it makes short, fast, acrobatic sallies to catch flies, mosquitoes and dragonflies in the air or on the surface of the water. It tolerates the closeness of boats very well.
How and when to see it
Year-round. It is one of the easiest birds to spot during boat or kayak trips. Present in any corner with open water and floating vegetation.
