A kingfisher intermediate in size between the Green Kingfisher and the Ringed Kingfisher. The back, head and wings are emerald green. The neck has a white collar. The male's breast has a broad rufous-chestnut band. The belly is white. The bill is long, stout and black. It measures 28 to 30 cm. It prefers larger, more open rivers and channels than the Green Kingfisher, and is more common than the American Pygmy Kingfisher. The call is a harsh "trrrek," louder than that of the Green Kingfisher.
Behaviour
Solitary and territorial. It frequents medium-sized rivers, wide channels and the more open lagoon shores. It perches on low branches over the water. When hunting it makes precise diving flights. It is the kingfisher that makes most use of the flowing rivers of the Iberá, such as the streams of Portals Carambola and Galarza.
How and when to see it
Year round in medium-sized rivers and channels. Detected by its call and its straight, fast flight over the water.
