It goes about in pairs all year round, and its name comes from its own whistle: a cutiri cutiri repeated in flight. The male has a red bill and the female pale face patches; both carry the shiny wing speculum.
Behaviour
It swims close to the floating vegetation and rests on banks and logs. It flies low and straight, whistling.

All year round on any quiet lagoon or marsh. Check the water-hyacinth edges from piers and walkways.
