A medium-sized duck of 41 to 50 cm with pure white cheeks and throat that contrast with the dark brown cap and the mottled cinnamon body. The body feathers are chestnut with pale edges, giving a scaled appearance. The bill is blue-gray with a striking red patch at its base. The tail is pointed and held erect when the bird is alert. The wings have a bright green speculum with a white border. It inhabits lagoons and marshes of fresh or slightly brackish water.
Behaviour
Social. It swims in small groups in open lagoons and marshes. It feeds by filtering the water with its bill in shallow waters: aquatic plants, seeds, aquatic insects and small crustaceans. It also reaches the bottom with its neck when the water is not very deep. Not very shy in the protected areas of the Iberá.
How and when to see it
Year-round in the open lagoons. Portal Laguna Iberá and Galarza. Resident and nomadic depending on water levels.
