Brown-and-yellow Marshbird

A large icterid of 20 to 22 cm. The upperparts, wings and tail are dark olive green. The throat, breast and belly are a bright, vivid yellow. The bill is long, black and slightly curved. The eyes are dark. The contrast between the olive green of the upperparts and the yellow of the belly makes it unmistakable. It inhabits the wet grasslands, the tall-grass marshes and the savannas of the Iberá. Very gregarious.

Behaviour

It lives in groups of 10 to 50 individuals or more. It feeds on the grassland floor on insects, seeds and fruit. The groups move in noisy formations over the tall-grass marshes. It also eats aquatic invertebrates at the marsh edges. The song is a melodious whistle.

How and when to see it

Year-round. The flocks are easy to see and hear in the wet grasslands and marshes of the Laguna Iberá, Uguay and Galarza portals.
