A very striking and unmistakable tyrant flycatcher. The male is entirely glossy black with a short, pale yellow bill (hence "silver bill") and a striking yellow fleshy eye-ring; the iris is pale. The female is brown with dark streaks and a reduced eye-ring. It measures 15 to 17 cm. It inhabits the marshes, lagoon edges and reedbeds with emergent vegetation throughout the Iberá. In flight the male shows a striking white wing patch.
Behaviour
It perches on rushes, cattails or stems emerging from the marsh, from where it watches and launches short sallies to catch insects. The male sings from exposed perches with a simple, repeated call. Solitary or in pairs. The intense yellow eye is visible from afar.
How and when to see it
Year-round in the marshes and lagoon edges. One of the most striking birds of the reedbeds thanks to the contrast of the black male with its yellow eye.
