One of the most beautiful and least common waterbirds of the Iberá. The back is olive-brown and the breast grayish sky-blue, with sky-blue-turquoise wing coverts and a whitish belly. The bill is greenish yellow and the legs are yellow. The toes are very long. It measures 23 to 26 cm. It is smaller and more delicate than the Purple Gallinule. It inhabits the densest water hyacinth beds and closed reedbeds.
Behaviour
An omnivore of dense wetland: the seeds of aquatic plants, insects and small invertebrates. Very elusive and hard to observe: it moves quickly among the floating vegetation and hides at any disturbance. It is most easily detected during its short flights between patches of vegetation.
How and when to see it
Dawn in channels with water hyacinths. Best detected with very slow, silent navigation. One of the "tough tickboxes" of birding in the Iberá.
