It breeds in Patagonia and every autumn travels thousands of kilometres north to sit out the cold. The male, black with a cinnamon back, is unmistakable; the female repeats the pattern in brown. It hardly ever perches high: its life happens at ground level.
Behaviour
Terrestrial: it runs in short bursts over muddy shores and short grass, hunting insects in plain sight.
How and when to see it
Winter visitor: it arrives from Patagonia mainly from June to August and heads back south when the cold eases.
