A tyrant flycatcher of 37 to 42 cm including the very long, forked tail. The upperparts, head and wings are grayish blue. The throat and neck have black and white streaks. The belly and breast are pale gray and white; the wing has a rufous band. The tail is long with the outer feathers very elongated, forming a "scissor." In flight it shows a combination of gray, black and white with the rufous wing band. It inhabits the wet grasslands with marshes of the Iberá.
Behaviour
It inhabits the grasslands and wet marshes, where it flies with elegant undulating movements, using the long tail in a spiral. It hunts insects in flight over the grassland and marsh. It perches on reeds and stems above the water. Uncommon and local (Vulnerable in Argentina); its southern limit reaches the edge of the Iberá. Larger than the strange-tailed tyrant.
